Chapter 1 - Page 3

In which Our Heroine’s best friend calls her a layabout.

NOTES

What you see here is the third time I drew Danielle for that first panel. I never even used the first drawing; I’d have to check my files, but I think I screwed up the inking on that one. Also, her shirt was originally a sort of powder blue. Pink was my first choice, but upon seeing it I thought it made her look superficial and tacky. Not that pink always looks superficial and tacky, but on her, especially with her expression in the earlier drawings … OH yeah.

This and the next page used to be a single page; it was somewhere around the time I was wrapping up the last couple of pages of Chapter 1 that I decided to stretch this scene out, after discovering I’d written and thumbnailed a much longer version sometime in either late 2006 or early 2007. I liked the idea of giving them a little longer dialogue, since later on I kind of tossed the girls into the middle of things pretty quickly — just five more minutes or so of just being themselves before weird stuff started happening really appealed to me. If I wasn’t in such a hurry to get the world and its characters set up, I probably would have given them ten pages to just BE, but y’know, the name of the strip isn’t “Jenn and Dani get a sandwich,” it’s SCWONKEY DOG, and the title character has to get on stage sooner or later, right?
