In which we are introduced to Dr. Zappilious Rand Starr, who is a big jerk.
NOTES
Zappilious Starr (yes, that would be Zapstar for short, though I don’t think anyone in any SCWONKEY story has called him that since I was in middle school) is a character I added to the great and terrible SCWONKEY DOG mythos when I was in the third grade. He started off as a boastful superhero, but soon I established him as the science guy, like Donatello in NINJA TURTLES, Perceptor or Wheeljack in TRANSFORMERS, and the Beast in X-MEN. Except that he was also Scwonkey’s best bud — and, when it was still established that Scwonkey had a sister, his brother-in-law.
Yeah, that’s no longer in continuity.
Anyway, he turned into the jerk you see here when I entered middle school and my best friend at the time decided that being accepted by his peers was more important than being my friend and turned his back on me. That kind of soured the whole Scwonkey-Zapstar relationship. Oh well, it’s more fun to write sniping back and forth anyway.
Oddly enough, he still looks almost exactly like the character I drew back in third grade. He used to have stars for eyes, but they were quickly changed into the shades you see here. The mad scientist hair came to me sometime in the fall that year — I know this because I remember dreaming it up in my bedroom in the trailer my family lived in until that Christmas. The yellow stripes on his pointy-shouldered tunic (itself a holdover from when the first step in drawing him was actually to draw a star, then add arms, legs, and a head) are the only real recent addition; I was considering other accents, but I think that’s probably enough.
