Chapter 1 - Page 11
In which Danielle and Jennifer take a ride.
NOTES
I kept being sorely tempted to redraw the second panel, but Jenn’s just too perfect there. At least, that’s what I kept telling myself to prevent myself from going on a redrawing spree …
This is the page where I started adding those screenplay-style setting captions. This also marks the moment where I had to name the city our cast lives in. In the grand tradition of such generic major metropolitan centers as Central City and Capital City, I decided to go with Centropolis — it got bonus points for actually being the name of a town in both Kansas, where I’ve spent the bulk of the past twenty-six years of my life, and Missouri, which would get a solid second place in that ranking. I still haven’t figured out where it is in the country, though. Any ideas?
Danielle’s scooter is a composite of several snazzy models I saw pictures of on the ‘net. I just wish I would’ve put more traffic on those roads, though I kind of have this idea that they’re taking a shortcut across town. The real win of this page is those driving backgrounds. I think those turned out great.
Dani originally had a purse in that first panel on the scooter, but when I forgot to draw it in the second and third, I erased it from the first. While I can try and justify her decision to leave her purse behind, it really rings false in retrospect. Jennifer, as you’ll see on the next page, at least has pockets on her jacket; I suppose her I.D. and emergency cab fare are in one of them. Though in Jenn’s case she’s paranoid enough that she might have them in one of those travel pouches you hide under your shirt …
