Chapter 2 - Page 23

In which Dr. Bostworth and his wife are witness to a near-folly.

The crossed lines and logo at the top of the page are a synthesis of a device used in Warren Ellis and Stuart Immonen’s Nextwave (though I’m using it straight, where there it was all part of the offbeat tone of the book) and the station identification effect used by the station that originally aired the anime series Peace Maker Kurogane — TV Asahi, I think? I’ll probably keep playing with this effect through the end of the first six chapters or so. It’s redundant, sure, but I love little odd ritualized odds and ends like this.

Here we see Nathan Bostworth again very briefly; I think it’s just enough to bring across his character and his relationship to the other key, named cast members as well as the events they’re caught up in — that is, if the disdain he showed for Zappy in Chapter 1 wasn’t quite enough to get it all out there. My only frustration here is that the top panel is so big that when we have a shot of the Rabbit Dropship at the bottom, it’s kind of tiny. But the top drawing of Nathan and his wife is a better drawing, anyway …

The book in Nathan’s hand is one that I’d heard a lot about on the liberal radio shows around the time I constructed the page. It’s something I’d be interested in reading, if I had any time for reading at this point … but the ideas therein were very intriguing to me. If you swing that way politically, you might want to look it up.

Notice Zappy’s word choice — he’s afraid it wouldn’t look good for the Rabbit to crash in the city.
