Chapter 2 - Page 29

In which quick thinking is strongly recommended.

It Is Half Past Three

I’m tired, and I’m watching the minutes tick away — oh look, there goes my time to sleep before work in the morning! “Good bye, sleep!” he said, yawning loudly. So I don’t think I’ll write much of anything here and see if I can get about three hours before I am roused for work in the morning.

A few things running through my mind right now … first, look, it is the Starship Enterprise! I look at this picture and go, “Yes, this is appreciably more detailed than the tiny model they used in the old TV show and the original movies. And you are all geeking out because … hm?” It’s not like a neat-looking CG Enterprise is going to make this J.J. Abrams Star Trek movie better than, say, The Wrath of Khan. A good script that’s actually about something is all that can do that. Khan is great because it’s both an excellent cheesy romp with two great ham actors chewing all the scenery in sight and it’s also a good solid yarn about a lifelong adventurer who’s spent his life cheating death realizing his own mortality. All these rumors about dumb time travel plots leave me leery.

It doesn’t help that I’ve personally never watched any of Abrams’ previous work, and the trailers for his newest film — Cloverfield, out today — make it look like the kind of thing where you’re rooting all the way through for the big monster to kill all these obnoxious twerps. Seriously. Oh, the reviews are good — though heaven knows the earliest ones I saw were at Ain’t It Cool News, so I’m like, “Yeahhh, I don’t think I’m riding that wavelength; this probably isn’t any good, especially with this particular ballyhooing going on.” And I’ve derived enjoyment from stories where I wanted to strangle the main character before — Haruhi Suzumiya comes to mind. But really, I’m just not feeling this thing.

And yet, that Dragon Ball movie that they’re shooting in Mexico? Bring it on. It should at least be good for a laugh.
