Chapter 2 - Page 32

In which Zaero receives some bad news.

Yes, I Gave Up

So at about 3:30 this morning I was staring at the half-colored Rabbit Dropship and thinking about how I’d barely had any sleep the night before, after watching most of the episodes of Transformers Animated aired so far with my pal Levi and talking on the phone for about three hours with Ally Comix co-conspirator Evan … so I just threw my arms in the air and went to bed.

Consequently, if you don’t see a comic page above this post, it’s because it’s not done yet. But it should be up sometime this afternoon (fingers crossed). I plan on actually getting sleep tonight, recharging the ol’ batteries, so this shouldn’t happen again on Friday.

As an aside, Transformers Animated is really, really good. As I was telling Evan, it’s the Transformers show we should have gotten back when Masters of the Universe and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were being relaunched during the first half of the decade — a smartly written reimagining of the original core mythos and characters of the franchise. Mind you, Transformers Animated keeps only a few characters dead-on to their original interpretations — Megatron has the appearance of the classic series villain, though his scheming ways more recall Beast Wars Megatron, but Starscream IS basically a sharper, deadlier, upgraded take on original Generation 1 Starscream. The Autobots are a lot more like the Beast Wars crew, with this version of Optimus Prime sitting somewhere on the “inexperienced commander” continuum between Optimus Primal and the original 1986 Transformers: The Movie’s Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime. Ratchet is a cross between cranky old Kup and Beast Wars engineer Rhinox; Bumblebee is a more kid-friendly version of Beast Wars smartass Rattrap. And Bulkhead and Prowl round out the roster as the Big Dumb Guy and Cool Aloof Ninja Guy, respectively — archetypes that we haven’t really had before that seem to work quite well. I really like Prowl, which is kind of a first; the original Prowl, the police car, was at least neat looking but kind of a jerk, and the recent Transformers Energon version was really kind of unfortunately designed. A very playable figure, to be sure, but his head sculpt made him look old and his body construction was very, very blocky and toyetic. But Animated Prowl is a total badass with a sleek design and a cool color scheme. That’s a figure I’m totally going to snag when it comes out.

Which brings me to my big complaint about Animatedthe toys aren’t out yet. I want my Prowl! I want my Bulkhead! I want the new Megatron figure (love the way the classic grey and red color scheme looks with the gold Decepticon insignia in the middle)! I want the spike-covered bounty hunter, Lockdown! But no, apparently the live action movie toys are doing too well, so they need to unleash further wave upon wave of them on the toy-buying public. Which I guess is fine, but I’m not excited about those the way I am about the Animated figures, especially after watching the show.

*sigh*
