Chapter 2 - Page 34

So it begins.

Can I Have The Thirty-Six Hour Day Now, Thanks?

This past weekend I went up to Kansas City with some friends and bought ten comics trade paperbacks — five manga volumes, three digest-sized OGNs, a recent DC Comics superhero TPB, and a big thick collection of a rather well-regarded old genre indy darling — and since then I haven’t had a moment to read a one of them. I’m either on the phone, at the drawing table, or at the computer. And I don’t see that letting up any time soon. Levi’s coming by on Thursday to show me the first of the new Evangelion remake movies, and I have a feeling that the moment the movie’s over, I’m going to have to show the poor fellow the door so I can get Friday’s page up before six a.m. As far as the movie goes, he assures me that it’s all kinds of awesome, with stunning animation and largely very slick direction that’s far afield from the “hide the fact that we can’t afford to animate anything” direction of the old Eva TV show.

If you only see a single panel above, please know that this is likely to change; I’ve got at least one additional shot I’d like to place in what is, as of this writing, the empty space above Scwonkey’s head.

And yes, there he is. Thirty-four pages in, and our title character finally takes the stage. I drew and erased and drew and erased that expression probably half a dozen times. I wanted it to be perfect. And while I’m not sure it is, it certainly portrays the proper sense of attitude. Scwonkey is kind of a jerk. He was an outcast and a misfit in his youth; digitally thumb back, look at those memories Jennifer unlocked, young Scwonkey, Zappy, and Leonard all together. They were all each other had and fed off of each other’s rage at the world around them. Of course they all became smug, sarcastic adults, arrogantly confident in their abilities, wherever they may lie. Scwonkey is very, very good at shooting people and things. He is deeply interested in filling Zaero with holes. Friday, we’ll see how that goes for him. I’m as interested in the results as anyone else; unfortunately, in order to find out, I’m going to have to expend some effort.

You people are so damn lucky, and you don’t even know it, do you?

–Jonathan
